The gap between the keyframes is where the audio will fade. You will need to make two keyframes, one keyframe at the start of where you want the audio to fade out, and the second to completely mute the audio. Because of the way audio works the amount you need to lower the audio levels to will vary from track to track. Lowering the audio level to the minuses will quieten the audio and fade it out the lower it gets. To fade out audio in After Effects you will need to lower the audio level with keyframes over time. The audio fading out signals to the viewer that the video is over, or the section is changing. A slow fade out of audio is often used at the end of a video as a clean way to end.
